What's Cooking: 3 Perfect Holiday Gifts
As a nutritionist it’s safe to say that food is my life – and a never-ending source of interest and learning. I also love to eat, I love to cook and most of all, I love to share all I’ve learned over the years, teaching those who want to eat and feel better how to do it through wonderful, healthy foods.
Obviously, to bring it all together, you need to start with fantastic, fresh, unadulterated ingredients and the tools to make it happen. But long before it’s time to stick fork in it, the cornerstone of it all is, a fabulous recipe.
Granted, there’s no shortage of recipes out there floating around online, but if you’re trying to eat on the healthy side it may be a challenge to find exactly what you’re looking for. Depending on what your specific needs are, it’s easy to make a mistake, particularly if the quality of the recipe is poor, or it’s got way too much of the things you may need to avoid, for example, sugar, dairy, gluten, and so on.
With this in mind, I wanted to make your holiday shopping list easier for the foodie in you life and recommend three of my absolute all-time favorite cookbooks to you. Not only are they good reads for chefs of all skill levels, but also they are simply gorgeous and insightful, sharing the wisdom of food and its ability to nourish and heal. As I always say, food is medicine, and come to think of it, it’s a bit magical too – which to my mind makes these books extra-special.
Bon Appétit – and have a wonderful holiday!
1. Genes to Plate: Nutrition Made Personal to Fit Your Unique Genes and Type
I just love this book! It’s a treasure trove of 100 fantastic recipes, all of which focus on providing your genes with the nutrients they need to flourish – no cookie cutter advice here! Those just-for-you nutrients act as sparkplugs to run different aspects of your metabolic processes that are run by our genes. So, when you support your genes with the foods they respond to best, you can start to heal (and in some cases reverse) common health problems – so this one should be a kitchen essential for anyone looking to feel great again.
2. The Essential Thyroid Cookbook
Another of my all-time favorites is The Essential Thyroid Cookbook. It is an excellent guide on how to deal with thyroid problems, and how to feed the thyroid so it can thrive. It includes an excellent explanation of the thyroid and the immune system, how they work and how to support them with nutritionally balanced, thyroid-specific recipes that are loaded with thyroid-friendly nutrients. The book is well researched, thoughtful and educational, while at the same time, unfussy, smart and delicious. If you’ve been battling problems like Hashimotos, hypothyroidism and/or other thyroid related challenges, this book is an absolute must-have.
3. Well Nourished: Mindful Practices to Heal Your Relationship with Food, Feed Your Whole Self, and End Overeating
Mindfulness is certainly an idea whose time as come – and I adore this book for applying those wonderful, peaceful, thoughtful practices to the subject of food! With so many people struggling with food choices and fighting weight battles, this book may well be the answer. Instead of stuffing feelings with food, or taking comfort in too much of it, Well-Nourished shows readers how to develop a mindful, battle-free, loving relationship with food (– an idea I totally support and always try to instill in my patients as well). With the help of mindful, nourishing practices for the mind, body and spirit, the mindful approach is a game-changer, and for many people, I believe it can be a life-changer!
