My passion for nutrition guides my life and my work

Throughout my life and career, I have witnessed the healing and restorative power of food as medicine in managing chronic illness and frustrating health problems. And yes, I’ve had my share!

Sometimes, it feels close to miraculous when challenging conditions are reversed and resolved through nutritional therapy. I also know that some diseases like ALS, which my mother fought gallantly, may not always be reversed, but progression can be halted and quality of life improved through nutrition and other modalities.

Optimizing your nutritional status is also the best way to prevent disease long before it begins. What you eat can make a difference in your energy, vitality, and longevity! —Kathie

My philosophy

  • Self-care practices are essential to health and healing. For me, this means the active meditation I practice when I’m swimming laps in the YMCA pool, walking my dog Dottie Rose, or enjoying a good night’s sleep. I encourage you to establish your own practices. That might be simply connecting to your breath when you are feeling stressed. exploring guided imagery, drumming, drawing, or dance — whatever self-directed activity calms your nervous system.

  • While living in the UK years ago, I was introduced to integrative therapies. When I returned to the States, I lead the nutrition team at Canyon Ranch Health Resorts in beautiful Western Massachusetts. I worked with highly skilled integrative physicians, exercise physiologists, psychologists, coaches, and other professionals, many of whom I still collaborate with today. I helped establish The UltraWellness Center with my long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Mark Hyman.

  • I deepened my holistic training and became certified in mind body medicine, learning valuable skills and techniques that I use effectively with my clients. I’ve developed workshops on digestive health, detoxification, immune, and brain health at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, another place I love. I also studied qigong there and eventually became certified in evidence-based qigong.

Over the years, I’ve written several books on digestive health (one of the first on the microbiome) and metabolism which you will find if you browse my Shop.

Educating other healthcare professionals has always been a central focus of my work. I directed the acclaimed Food As Medicine and Mind, Mood & Food training programs for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine. And in 2015, I co-founded the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy (IFNA), a 100% online training program for dietitians and other healthcare professionals.

  • I am blessed as a mother and grandmother to 5 beautiful beings and the spouse of a military veteran. I care deeply about our children, our families, our country, our dear planet Earth, and each and every client whom I’ve had the opportunity to work with.

I look forward to connecting with you on your path to health and healing.

Let’s work together to improve your health and vitality!
